The Playground Meets: Klass Murda

By: Virginia “Steph” Donalds

We always look to New York City for new acts in Hip-Hop, missing out on the potential that Upstate, New York has to offer. Klass Murda is one of the newest acts hailing from Rochester, New York and is becoming an unstoppable force in Hip-Hop. The rapper is known for his witty lyrics on deep base, almost chilling drill beats; a great addition to the current drill trend in New York City.

Klass Murda began rapping at a young age. He soon found that something that was once a hobby turned into a life-long dream and career. Inspired by fellow New York rapper, 50 Cent, Murda understood what it meant to be determined to achieve that dream. He was infatuated with the way that 50 Cent was the perfect mixture of gangster and business man. “There’s a million ways of making money”, says Murda. “and that’s something that 50 was very [adamant] about”.

During the early parts of his 20’s, Klass Murda started his own label, BGM Entertainment. Creating this label not only challenged him as an artist, but as a true business man he was taking steps to become. He, in a way, was forced to take the business serious because he understood how many artists can ultimately get played in the industry; the one thing he definitely was not going to allow. For his idol, 50 Cent, would not have that.

Klass Murda released one of the biggest singles of his career with rapper Casanova called “Big Ape”. He tells The Playground that he initially thought that the single would only reach 100,000 views on YouTube overall. Little did he know, he would achieve that goal in the first three days post release. The single is now at 3.3M views, as of August 9th, 2021.

His most recent album, Motivation, is way more than another drill project, but an introduction to who Klass Murda is and what he values in life. The 12 song album has so many amazing features, including Pooh Shiesty, Rah Swish, Stunna 4 Vegas, and my personal favorite, Benny the Butcher. Songs like “Bali” and “Theme Song” stood out the most from the album, as they really showed Klass Murda’s artistic way of describing what motivates him as an artist and how he’s able to maneuver not only in the music industry but also in his everyday life. The album definitely has potential to become a hustler’s favorite playlist.
